自2012年3月24日起，澳洲正式實施學生簽證審核新辦法 Streamlined Visa Processing（簡稱SVP）。SVP可以解釋為「簡化簽證審理計劃」，旨在簡化學生簽證流程、加速簽證審理。
SVP政策只針對申請澳大利亞高等教育：即573簽證類別的學生， 包括本科以及本科打包課程、授課型碩士以及碩士打包課程。SVP不接受單獨的Associate Degree副學位、Graduate Diploma研究 生文憑、Graduate Certificate研究生證書、Diploma and Advanced Diploma文憑和高級文憑。如果學生只申請、並註冊了這類非學位課程，則不能通過SVP申請簽證，只能按照普通的簽證政策受理。
澳洲移民局公布的參與SVP政策的院校中，澳洲39所大學均在列。需要注意的是，在SVP新政下，申請澳洲的某所大學的本科或者碩士學位課程，若要配語言或橋樑課程，必須選擇該大學在移民局清單上指定的合作院校。若申請院校不在SVP的清單上，則仍然按照中國學生的風險等級 Assessment Level 3，即三級來審核。
如果學生申請的院校在上述清單中，申請簽證時不看國籍，統一下調至移民局規定的最低風險：學生申請參與SVP的院校，其簽證申請可以視作類似於Assessment Level 1學生簽證風險評估等級一級，也就是最低風險等級來審核，簽證流程更方便，簽證材料更簡單，簽證周期更短。
在遞交簽證時，符合相關條件的學生簽證申請人，只需提供一份經濟擔保聲明書，聲明自己或經濟擔保人有足夠資金來支付申請人在澳期間的學費、生活費和旅行費用等即可。除非簽證官有要求，否則申請人無需提供任何經濟擔保證明材料。
SVP新政的實施，意味著申請高等教育類別的學生簽證，將無須提供大量的文書資料做證明，加快了簽證審理的速度。而且，移民局還取消了擔保金的規定，學生只需要在接受大學錄取通知時，簽署資金能力證明，並宣誓即可。
需要注意的是，這並不意味著移民局放鬆了對學生資金、語言能力的要求，而是移民局把這部分審核轉移給學校，由學生申請的學校與學校認可的留學服務機構，一起來審核學生的資金和語言是否符合赴澳就讀的要求。
參與SVP的學校將公布各自的「國際學生財務聲明表」，在學生正式接受該校錄取通知書之前填寫，作為學校審核學生資金狀況的依據，並以此判斷是否向學生髮放註冊確認函。而學校認可的留學代理機構，也需要幫助學校收集學生的財務相關信息，填寫留學代理機構評估聲明，以幫助學校做出判斷。這些信息，在最新公布的 573學生簽證SVP申請材料清單中，也得以明確體現。
